Retreats (Sesshin)

Sesshin is a concentrated, silent practice retreat, offering a full day schedule of meditation, one-on-one meetings with a teacher, Dharma Talks, liturgy and service practice, working & eating together.

Why do Sesshin?

As Soto Zen master Dogen Zenji says, “to study the Buddha Way is to study the self; to study the self is to forget the self.” Putting ourselves in the tight container of the sesshin schedule, we have the opportunity to study ourselves in unique depth. Sesshin practice can be challenging and should not be treated as a relaxing getaway. But for those with an earnest curiosity about reality and True Self, the juice is worth the squeeze.

Participants are encouraged to register for full time participation, to get the most out of sesshin. But given the complex demands of our modern, metropolitan lives, all are welcome to join for as much of each retreat as their personal schedule allows. Overnight accommodations are available for guest practitioners, though local participants often prefer to sleep at their own home.

Sesshins and Retreats are donation based

If you would like to stay at the center overnight, there is a $30/night charge. Otherwise, your participation and donation help us to continue sesshin practice at SWZC. No one will ever be turned away for lack of resources. However you can give back to the center is deeply appreciated.
