To study the Buddha way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things.

Residency Information

Sweetwater Zen Center is a community of people following the awakened way. There is usually room for anyone who has a strong aspiration to live in an intentional, meditation community. Housing varies from small rooms to two bedroom cottages.

We envision the center to be a place where we can reveal our practice of wisdom and compassion right in the midst of work, family, and social responsibilities. Residents live in the Center while maintaining their work or school outside. We attend the daily schedule as much as we can within our busy schedules. We're creating a space where people can live a spiritual life within the context of our lives.

Residents participate in life at the Zen Center through meditation, council, working together, and studying Zen. Residents follow guidelines for practicing at SWZC. Even though the guidelines are a minimal time commitment, following this kind of practice can truely
transform our life.

Residency Fees:

Cottage fees are $950 for one person and $1000 for two people, not including utilities. The fees include housing, membership, discounted intensive retreats and opportunity to meet with a teacher.

Minimal practice requirements for resident membership are:

  1. Participate in at least 3 scheduled zazen periods per week.

  2. Attend dokusan with Seisen Roshi or daison with Eko Sensei at least once a month.

  3. Participate in caring for the Center (cleaning, gardening, maintenance, office work etc.) at least 2 hours per month.

  4. Participate in resident councils at least once a month.

  5. Attend at least one dharma talk per month.

  6. Support and encourage each other’s practice.

  7. Keep your housing neat, clean and in good repair (repairs that a resident cannot do are reported to the maintenance group).

  8. Pay fees on time (fees are due on the 1st of each month and are late after the 10th).
